焼尻島の天狗

昔、焼尻島に暮らしていたアイヌの人々は、住居を建てたり、燃料にしたりするため、山から木を伐り出していました。

しかし、島にはどうしても木を伐ることのできない場所が一か所だけありました。

そこには大きなアカエゾマツがそびえ、その木には焼尻島の主である天狗が住んでいるとされていました。
人々は天狗を恐れ、決してその場所には近づきませんでした。

ところがある日、一人のアイヌの青年がこの言い伝えを破り、天狗の住む松を切り倒そうとしました。

そのとき、倒れてきた大木の下敷きとなり、青年は命を落としてしまいます。

島の人々は、これは天狗の祟りに違いないと考え、それ以来、その場所には近づかず、木を伐ることもしなくなりました。

この言い伝えは後に和人にも伝えられ、村人たちはその場所に祠を建て、折に触れてお参りするようになったといいます。

今もその場所には、祠と鳥居の跡が静かに残されています。

焼尻島の森には、こうした昔の人々の畏れや祈りが、今もひっそりと息づいています。

Folktales of Yagishiri Island – Part One

The Tengu of Yagishiri Island

Long ago, the Ainu people who lived on Yagishiri Island cut trees from the forests to build their homes and for firewood.

But there was one place where they simply could not bring themselves to cut the trees.

There stood a great Sakhalin spruce, and it was said that a Tengu, the guardian spirit of Yagishiri Island, lived in the great tree. The Ainu people were afraid of the Tengu and never went near the place.

One day, however, a young Ainu man ignored the old warning and tried to cut down the Tengu’s tree.

As the great tree fell, he was caught underneath it and lost his life.

The islanders believed that the young man had suffered the Tengu’s curse. From that day on, they stayed away from the place and never cut its trees again.

The story was later passed down to the Japanese settlers who came to the island. They built a small shrine there and would visit it to pray from time to time.

Even today, the remains of the small shrine and its torii gate can still be found there.

Deep in the forests of Yagishiri Island, traces of the old stories, fears, and prayers of the people who lived here long ago still quietly remain.
